COURSE OVERVIEW
The course gives students the creative and technical knowledge and skills they need to become professionals in the jewellery design industry. It allows students to explore a variety of aspects in traditional and contemporary jewellery design. The emphasis is placed on creativity, innovation, experimentation and materials application through technical skills. Students also learn skills in design management, portfolio-building and marketing.

ASSESSMENT METHODS
All modules will be assessed through a combination of assessments, tests, class participation and written examinations. To be awarded the Advanced Diploma, students will need to achieve a passing mark of 50% for all modules. For Degree and Master programmes, students will need to achieve the passing grade stipulated by the University for all modules.

TEACHING AND LEARNING 
It is essential that a student is subjected to a broad range of views and experiences in order that the learning process may elicit, sometimes over a prolonged period, appropriate routes for a person to take, particularly in the latter stages of the Programme.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Applications for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) are assessed on an individual basis. For design courses, applicants must present their portfolios, transcripts and relevant documents during the interview. They may be advised to take up bridging modules if deemed necessary by the Programme Directors.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
All courses at Raffles Design Institute are conducted in English. Students must be able to speak and write fluently in English.

Students who fulfil any of the requirements below will be exempted from English as a Second Language (ESL) classes:
• Minimum TOEFL score of 550* (paper-based) or 79–80 (internet-based)
• Minimum IELTS score of 6.0* (academic module) or equivalent
• Minimum score of C6 in English at GCE 'O' level
• TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) with a minimum score of 650

• Module Synopses  
• (1) Studio Practice I: Contemporary Jewellery Design  
  • An introduction to contemporary Jewellery Design through specific projects, which investigate both geometric and organic forms as design influences in Jewellery – exploring a range of non-traditional materials.
    Credit Points: 15
• (2) Observational Drawing Skills  
  • Observational drawing skills through the analysis of the Human form and natural structures – therefore gaining further confidence in freehand drawing through understanding basic principles of structure, form, volume, space, planes and lines.

• (3) 3D Conceptualisation  
  • During this module students will learn that sometimes an abstract or seemingly irregular thought pattern can lead to a unique and appropriate design solution. Sometimes that process can be influenced by a single or a number of factors; Technology, Visuals, Words, Cultural trends and market research. During this module students will undertake several projects to help understand and create design solutions determined by those topics referencing; Nature, Future Technology, Word & Image Association and observing ‘sub-cultures’. Students will also evaluate some iconic products to gain an understanding as to these unique origins.

• (4) Model Making  
  • Introduction to model making - understanding form, structure, volume and space through the use of a variety of basic model making materials for the construction of three dimensional forms – understanding the importance of scale in design.

• (5) Studio Practice II: Resin and Acrylic  
  • Through a series of demonstration and projects, students experience the exploration into the concept of transformation from liquid to solid and/or solid to liquid through conceptualisation and the construction of specific jewellery items.

• (6) Colour Analysis in 3D Design  
  • A study of colour theories, standards, systems and their applications to design production. Included will be a study of applications to two and three dimensions using both additive and subtractive colour concepts and study of perceptual effects.

• (7) Digital Imaging  
  • Exploring the applications of digital photography and imaging software through image capture and manipulation and the application to presentation of 3D images.

• (8) Materials and Processes  
  • An introduction to specific materials and their applications. Basic workshop health and safety procedures and an exposure to and investigation of a wide range of materials and how they are utilised in 3D design.

• (9) Studio Practice III: Metal and Wood  
  • A further exploration of contemporary Jewellery Design through the investigation of a variety of wood and non-precious metals, allowing students to experiment with form, structure, volume, joining methods and surface manipulation.

• (10) Design Drafting and Rendering  
  • To further expand drawing skills and knowledge through the use of technical drawing and perspective marker rendering, therefore providing a wider visual vocabulary, which can be applied to 3D Design.

• (11) Computer Aided Design  
  • Understanding the applications and processes of AutoCAD software – in 2D and 3D applications and their relevance within 3D Design.

• (12) Academic Research and Communication Skills  
  • This course prepares students in Communication and Research skills. The three main areas of focus are: Research and Analysis, Academic Writing Skills, Academic Presentation Skills.

• (13) Studio Practice IV: Enamelling and Glass  
  • Students will be exposed to traditional forms of Jewellery including Enamelling and contemporary applications in Glass, further expanding knowledge in material applications within Jewellery Design.

• (14) Cultural Studies  
  • Investigation and analysis of traditional and contemporary Western and Asian Art & Design movements and their impact on 21st Century Contemporary Design.

• (15) Solid Modelling  
  • Solid Modeling emphasises understanding of the designer's approach towards presentation of design solutions in a disciplined electronic format. In this module, students will be introduced to SolidWorks, 3D mechanical design software.

• (16) Jewellery Technology  
  • Analysis and investigation of a range of manufacturing processes (one-off and mass production) though lectures, discussion and visits to industry, which will broaden knowledge and understanding of the constraints of specific processes and their applications within Jewellery design.

• (17) Studio Practice V: Silversmithing  
  • An introduction to silversmithing, where students will be exposed to various design influences, conceptual ideas and practical solutions relating to contemporary Jewellery design through a series of lectures, demonstrations, individual and group projects. Simultaneously, students will be introduced to specific processes including a variety of forming and joining methods.

• (18) Design Theory  
  • An analysis of 20th Century Design movements and their impact on specific areas of 3D Design in the 21st Century, in particular Consumer Products, Jewellery, Furniture and Glass.

• (19) Computer Rendering  
  • Students will learn the applications and processes of Rhinoceros software based on free form 3D modeling and computer rendering. Students will be introduced to the principles of NURBS geometry which can be used to create curves, surfaces and solids within 3D design.

• (20) Studio Practice VI: Gem Analysis and Stone Setting  
  • Students will be exposed to a range of Stone setting methods and Gem analysis – including classifications and identification processes of precious and semi-precious stones, further enhancing their main area of study.

• (21) 3D Manipulation  
  • 3D Studio Max is a powerful and popular desktop 3D graphic programme, where it is used in a wide variety of commercial and creative applications. Students will gain knowledge and skills in three dimensional rendering through the application of 3D Studio Max.

• (22) Design Management  
  • Understanding the importance of professional practice including areas of: project management, intellectual property, legal aspects, meeting procedures, client management and documentation procedures.

• (23) Major Design Project  
  • This final project will be self-proposed, from previous projects undertaken throughout the year and developed through to pre-production stage, under the supervision and guidance of the studio lecturer.

• (24) Internship (Jewellery Design)  
  • An opportunity to experience ‘hands on’ professional practice, through an attachment with a mentor within industry in a chosen area of specialism.

• (1) Project Management  
  • This subject examines the ways in which projects are managed to be delivered on time, on budget and meeting the quality and standards specified by the designer. The importance of project management feedback is emphasises as being critical in the development of the project design process. Project formulation, design and the technical skills involved for effective feedback are also examined.

• (2) Sustainable Design  
  • The aim of this subject is to give students an awareness of the importance of designing for sustainability in addition to providing a valuable knowledge of current sustainable technologies, materials, design innovation and practitioners.

• (3) One Off to Mass Production  
  • The application of historical contexts, the influence of craft cultures and the industrial revolution and their influence on contemporary trends in the design of the object is the focus of this subject.

• (4) Jewellery Components & Fabrication Processes  
  • To gain a broad knowledge of contemporary and historical components and fabrication techniques and to redesign and apply these to design solutions.

• (5) Design Research Interactive Systems  
  • This subject aims to give students an introduction to all interactive systems (Human Factors and Ergonomics) that affect the design process, design research and design practice.

• (6) Major Studio Project  
  • This subject provides an opportunity for students to design and realise a significant series or body of design work.

• (7) Design and Marketing  
  • This subject introduces the basic concepts of marketing and public relations and will examine how these relate to the wants and needs of today’s design practice, business and real/potential consumers. Students will learn how to apply these principles in practice when making decisions about marketing their products and services to potential customers in domestic and international markets.

• (8) Exhibition Design  
  • To introduce students to designing exhibition spaces and project scope, including planning, costing, sourcing, negotiating, and design work undertaken in designated space.

• Module Synopses  
• 1) Design Management  
  • This subject enhances the practice management capacity of participants. It exposes the students to advanced skills required in the formation of a new managerial class of designers who combine creativity, managerial skills and entrepreneurial spirit to succeed as practicing designers. It also exposes the students to a range of business management theories and techniques to enable them to be leaders of design teams. The unit will teach the students about the skills and knowledge required to run a successful design practice. It explores through case-based learning human resources issues, entrepreneurship and professional services marketing in strategic and scenario planning, networking and heretic marketing.

• 2) Global Strategic Management  
  • This module provides students with advanced knowledge and critical skills in understanding an organization’s strategic management position in a global economy. The module aims to build on an understanding of basic principles of strategic decision-making and management and the use of analytical tools for environmental analysis to develop a sophisticated, real-world understanding of processes that are critical to: • Creating a competitive market position • Sustaining a competitive market position • Leading and managing effectively in both domestic and international markets • Creating new businesses and effectively managing risk

• 3) Managing Resources for Competitive Advantage  
  • This subject is designed to focus student thinking on creating and sustaining competitiveness in existing companies and new start-ups. It is concerned with the application of theory to real world business development and the relevance and context of entrepreneurship and innovation in the 21st century. The learning and teaching is underpinned by the aim of promoting understanding of the importance of creating stakeholder value through a sustainable competitive advantage based upon the integration of the main functional areas of business (Finance, Marketing, HRM and Operations). The subject is centred on strategic decision-making with a specific focus on accessing, developing and utilising company resources. The subject has a functional focus that emphasises the practical implications of resource-based decision-making.

• 4) Sociology of Design  
  • This subject explores cultural theory in depth as a tool for analysing design culture. The students will be able to critically evaluate the implicit theoretical and philosophical assumptions in design practice with a view to setting out a means of understanding design issues, more informed by cultural theory. The unit introduces students to the disciplines of material cultural studies, visual cultural studies and cultural difference in a globalised world. The unit will combine lectures with seminars developing designed responses to contemporary cultural phenomena such as intercultural communication and subcultures. Students will be sensitised to the different and changing cultural backgrounds of clients and users in topics that deal with sign economies, post-colonialism, and resistance to change.

• 5) Leadership and Corporate Governance  
  • This module explores the concept of leadership and analyses the role of individual leaders at the corporate level in terms of their impact on: • A firm’s group culture • Sustainable, competitive performance • Managing stakeholder expectations • Ethical expectations and processes in the company

• 6) Research Methods  
  • This subject is designed to prepare masters students for their Advanced Project/Masters dissertation. It does so by introducing the concepts of academic research including topic selection, research methodology and methods, literature review, data analysis, and the techniques and conventions of academic writing.

• 7) Professional Leadership in Design  
  • This subject will develop student understanding of principles of leadership and management as applied to the broad field of design and the place of design-centred practices in commercial environments in the public and private sector. The importance of creating a design culture within both commercial and non-commercial organisations will be examined in the context of design practices focused on marketing, brand management, core values, competitiveness and design ethics. The unit will enable students to create and manage a design-centred culture to underpin decision-making and other activities throughout an organisation, creating and sustaining a differentiated, competitive and consistent corporate identity, design leadership and management processes that support entrepreneurship and innovation in commercial organisations.

• 8) Psychology of Design  
  • This subject seeks to impart to students a psychological perspective concerning people and their behaviour, to develop a high level of skills in considering relevant human factors in the design process. It will also guide the students to interrogate their own thinking styles and personality traits in their approach to design articulation. This unit enhances the client focus of its participants by exposing them to a range of psychological explanations for people’s behaviour and attitudes. Students will further explore advanced human factors and psychographics needed for optimising the usability and marketability of design

• 9) Entrepreneurship and Innovation  
  • This subject is designed to examine, in detail, the theories, relevance and context of entrepreneurship and innovation in 21st century businesses. Students will be exposed to a range of entrepreneurial activities and entrepreneurs across a range of industries, and they should develop an understanding of the threshold nature of entrepreneurial activity in terms of business creation, growth and development. This will be examined from an intra-business perspective and processes for the promotion of creativity, innovation and business creation within a corporate context will be analysed. Students should also develop a critical understanding of idea creation, risk analysis and the commercialisation process.

• 10) Advanced Project  
  • This subject provides a process that will enable students to use and extend the knowledge and skills that they have acquired during their programme of study. Using appropriate research methodologies and data collection methods, students will critically synthesize a body of knowledge relevant to the taught programme. On successful completion of this subject, the student will be able to demonstrate the ability to conduct research and organise the findings into a comprehensive and explicit
